Gillian Yorath

Biography

Gillian Yorath was born in Cardiff in 1957, and spent her childhood in Gwaelod Y Garth.

She was educated in Cowbridge High School and Cardiff College of Art. She later moved to London and completed an apprenticeship in gilding.

"After 30 years working in the antique restoration business as a carver and gilder I felt it was time to become more creative. Initially I began, in partnership with my husband, to make modern carved and gilded mirror frames, furniture and  sculpture. I  then  began alone to make decorative panels in textured gesso with some gilding. At this point I realised that what I really wanted to do was return to painting.
The landscape has always been important to me. My childhood was spent playing in the fields and hills near my home, and  visiting  the Brecon Beacons and the coast of Llangenneth, Tenby and Saundersfoot.  In 1979 my husband and I visited North Wales; we both loved it and in 1980 we moved there.
I paint landscapes and seascapes in oils of the places I’m inspired by".
